[Archived news stories may contain broken links.] November 28, 1998Dark Horse Manga AnthologySCOOP! I have heard from a reliable source that the manga anthology mentioned in last month's news will become a reality. Here's the direct quote: I just thought you should know that Dark Horse will continue to publish 3x3 Eyes in late 1999 or early 2000. It will be part of a manga anthology (128 pages, $4.95) which will contain 3x3E, You're Under Arrest, What's Michael?, and early Oh My Goddess. Isn't that great? Of course, we have a while to wait, but at least the 3x3 Eyes translations will be continuing (along with YUA, another manga I really like). Please note that, although this information comes from Dark Horse, it is NOT an official announcement. Do not e-mail Dark Horse with questions about the manga anthology yet. Basically, I was informed about this in order to spread the word to other 3x3 Eyes fans, so that they would stop begging DHC to publish more manga. It's going to happen eventually, so just be patient. (3x3 Eyes fans are good at that; it must be all the practice.) I want to mention that, as of this month, I have been providing 3x3 Eyes news on the web for 3 years. This is the first time I have received any inside information, but I hope it's not the last. Mailing List Is MovingAs announced on the main page, the 3x3 Eyes mailing list is changing locations. Chae An has hosted the list on his best.com account since 1996, but he will be shutting down that account in a few weeks. The new list is located here at sazan.net. Subscribers to the best.com mailing need to subscribe again to the new list, since the subscriber list will not be transferred automatically. You can easily subscribe using the web form on this site. (There have been some stability problems with the new list. See below for what I'm going to do about it.) FAQ 1.11The Frequently Asked Questions list has been updated with the new mailing list subscription information, and a few other tidbits. If you haven't read the FAQ yet, check it out. It is kept as up-to-date as possible. Of course, now it needs to be updated with the Dark Horse manga news. The next version will be 1.12, breaking the unintentional binary numbering scheme of 1.0, 1.01, 1.10, and 1.11. News From the MLIf you're not subscribed to the 3x3 Eyes Mailing List, you may miss out on the latest news (since sometimes I forget to include it here). Recently, Henrique Holschuh announced that Michael Surbrook had finished his Hero System conversion of Henrique's GURPS 3x3 Eyes RPG, and Fred Gallagher pointed out where to find some 3x3 Eyes Winamp skins. (I like to write "Winamp skins", because judging from my server logs it is a common search string. I also noticed some visitors came to the Gallery after searching for "tasteful nudity" and "x-rated art". I hope they weren't too disappointed.) I also wrote a bit on the list about Hinduism and 3x3 Eyes, in response to some interesting comments by Lord Pendragon. If you are not subscribed to the list, you can still read old posts in the list archive. Chae An will be providing all the old list digests for the archive soon, and once I add search capability to the digest it should be a very nice resource. FeaturelessnessI want to apologize for the lack of Feature articles recently. I mostly finished writing one this month, but I decided that it just did not live up to the high standard that I want to establish for the Features section. (In other words, it sucked.) It's hard to devote a lot of time to the features while simultaneously trying to finish the rest of the site. Also, I want the articles to be attractive as well as informative, but my scanner is back in the USA and my digital camera still hasn't arrived yet. (It was accidentally send by surface instead of airmail.) I'm going home for Christmas this year, so I plan to spend some quality time with the scanner. That means I may be offline from Dec. 19 to Jan. 7, 1999, but I'll try to at least keep up with my email. There are my lame excuses. I would like for the features to be monthly, but I may officially change them to every other month if I continue to have problems sticking to the schedule. At any rate, the next feature will be about real-world Tibet, and it will be available sometime in January. (Ironically, I first started working on the Tibet article during Christmas vacation 2 years ago as part of the initial design of this site.) As always, I hope you'll bear with me while I try to get things running smoothly. Speaking of which... sazan.net Finds a New HomeThere have been some stability problems here lately, not only with the new mailing list but also with this web server. I was originally happy with my web host Addr.com, but recently the service and support have become really lousy. Therefore, sazan.net will be moving to a new hosting service as soon as possible (probably next week). I haven't decided on a new host yet, but it will definitely have majordomo so that I can transfer the 3x3 Eyes mailing list as well. The goal is to make the transfer mostly invisible, but I'll try to get the word out if things go wrong. Bill Laswell = Otaku???It's time to revive the topic of musicians who are secretly anime fans. Unlike the earlier Alec Empire discovery, this one is not so clear-cut. (By the way, there is a Japanese domestic release of the Alec Empire CD, but I'm guessing most people don't realize the source of the samples.) Bill Laswell is one of my favorite musicians and producers. Recently, though, I've been noticing a strange trend to his music. First there was the Phantom City album titled Shiva Recoil (Virgin Records AMBT 21). Next was Bill Laswell's wonderful City of Light album (Sub Rosa SR114). The city of the title is Benares, India, where the album was recorded. Here's a bit of the spoken-word vocals by Lori Carson: I have not seen Parvati since she married that naked god Shiva, who rides a bull, decorates himself with snakes and ashes, lives in the cremation ground. Still the brilliance of her red rubies fill the sky like palaces, and the forests of her eight perfections bear more fruit than all the wishing trees in heaven. I bring her your ashes. OK, I'll admit that there's no direct link to 3x3 Eyes here, only to Hinduism. However, who should greet visitors to the Axiom home page, Laswell's record label, but Ultraman (not to mention masked Japanese guitarist Buckethead). You can't help but notice the familiar 3-shaped Om symbol lurking in the lower left of the picture. I'll leave the rest up to your imagination. If anyone knows of other albums related to 3x3 Eyes in some way, let me know. I'm currently investigating Third Eye-Blind and The Third Eye Foundation. The latter group's album titled You Guys Kill Me sounds suspicious, don't you think? Speaking of Otaku...Saving the best for last, there is a big feature on the lovely buta-enhanced Young Magazine web site about the "Overseas Manga Situation". It devotes quite a bit of space to American anime conventions and cosplay participants, with pictures. If you recently attended Anime Weekend Atlanta or Project A-kon while wearing a costume, Japanese fans may be staring at your picture right now. Click on the star at the top of the main page to get to the News section and see the article. Additional pages are available using the drop-down list. My favorite bit is the text at the top of the earlier pages. Here's the translation: "Ah, it's an otaku. Cool!"
That's all the news for now, but stay tuned for more silliness coming your way soon. Go to the News Archives for an index of past updates. |
