In the English-language ROM patch (see section 5.1) the dialogue has been shortened to fit in the available space. Ling-Ling: Big news, Pai! I was checking Yakumo's father's notebook, Ling-Ling: and it says there is a tribe that can control beasts! Pai: Wow! Well, they will have plenty of beast eggs or something, won't they? Ling-Ling: Well, I don't know, but they would certainly be expensive. Pai: But where are they? Ling-Ling: Hmm... The old man at the curio shop in Kowloon might know something. Pai: Right! Then Pai will go ask. Ling-Ling: Hold on. Better to wait until Yakumo returns from his job. Pai: It's OK! I have Hong-Nyang and friends. Ling-Ling: Well... Because Haan should be in Kowloon, go together with him. [1.2] Game overview 3x3 Eyes ~Juuma Houkan~ (Beast Restoration) is a side-scrolling adventure game for the Super Famicom (SNES). The game was released in Japan by Banpresto in 1995. 3x3 Eyes, pronounced "sazan eyes", is a popular Japanese comic and anime series. ~Juuma Houkan~ is the second 3x3 Eyes game for the SNES, the first being a top-down RPG released by Yukata in 1992. If you are new to 3x3 Eyes, here is a brief overview. A young girl named Pai came to Tokyo searching for Yakumo Fujii and carrying a message from his father, Professor Fujii. Yakumo's father disappeared in Tibet while searching for a mysterious race of three-eyed beings known as the Sanjiyan Unkara. Pai is one of the last of this race, and she is actually more than 300 years old. When Pai's third eye opens, her Sanjiyan personality awakens and she can use very strong magic. In order to save Yakumo's life, she uses her power to merge his soul with his own. From that point on Yakumo is a "Wu", an undead being who can feel pain but cannot die. Pai and Yakumo travel to Hong Kong searching for a way for them to become human. There they meet Li Ling-Ling from the monster-fighting agency Yogekisha and start to work for her. Later, Yakumo meets a magic trader named Haan Hazrat who teaches him how to use beast magic (juumajutsu). This is a rare and dangerous technique of controlling demonic beasts hatched from eggs. The controlled beasts can then be used as powerful weapons. As this game begins, the player takes control of Yakumo in order to explore, solve puzzles, and fight monsters. The original game story takes place some time between vols. 8 and 11 of the Japanese 3x3 Eyes manga. Yakumo is searching for the tribe with knowledge of beast magic in order to obtain some beast eggs from them. Of course, he is also looking for Pai. However, his search will not be easy... [1.3] Conventions This first part of this document explains how to play the game, for those who cannot read the Japanese manual. Some hints on completing the game are also offered. The second part of this document is a scene-by- scene walkthrough of the game. The walkthrough is intended to be read as the game is played, in order to understand the plot. *Do NOT read the entire walkthrough at once, or you will spoil the game!* Finally, there is a section of cheats, other tips, and acknowledgments. If you spot a mistake or translation error in this document, please let me know at dpark@sazan.net. Thanks! [2] Basic Gameplay This is a side-scrolling adventure game. As Yakumo, you can walk, run, jump, talk to people, pick up and use objects, and fight monsters. Although Yakumo is immortal, he can still be injured. When the health bar is empty, the game is over, although you can continue from that last checkpoint. (However, you will have to manually save the game to quit and start again later.) [infinite continues?] The storyline is fairly linear, although it branches into two different stories after the first chapter. There are a few side quests and secrets to be discovered. The game can be completed by trial and error even if you cannot read Japanese, although the hints below will certainly prevent a lot of frustration. [2.1] Controller functions The controller buttons have different uses depending whether you are controlling Yakumo in the game or selecting items in menus. Most of the actions in the game can be performed simply by moving the direction pad in the appropriate direction. Button Game Mode Menu Mode ====== ============================= ============================= UP look up, grab item above, move menu selector up open door, climb ladder DOWN look down, grab item below, move menu selector down go down ladder LEFT walk left (press LEFT twice move menu selector left to run) RIGHT walk right (press RIGHT twice move menu selector right to run) A select response, inventory select menu item B jump (hold to jump higher) cancel (close without select) X - - Y use selected inventory item - L - - R - - START toggle inventory display select item at title screen SELECT - - [2.2] Game menus After pressing START at the title screen, you will be given two choices: GAME START OPTION Here is a translation of the OPTION menu: SOUND BACKUP EXIT SOUND STEREO MONAURAL BACKUP (A prompt appears asking "Erase this file?") save slot 1 save slot 2 save slot 3 The backup menu allows you to delete your saved games. When you first start the game, all of the save slots are empty. (They say "from the beginning".) [2.3] Screen layout Once the actual game starts, there is a status bar at the top of the screen containing three windows and a red horizontal bar. The horizontal bar is Yakumo's health. It starts out at 50%, and if it drops to 0% the game is over. Yakumo's face appears in the top left window, and during conversations the other person's face appears in the top right window. The middle window shows the inventory item that is currently selected. When the game starts nothing is selected, but Yakumo has a portable phone and a paper charm in his inventory. The inventory is displayed by pressing START. The status bar now contains one large window showing all of the items Yakumo is holding. If he has more than six items, the direction pad can be used to scroll the window left and right. To use an item, first highlight it using the direction pad and select it with the A button. Then press the Y button when you want to use the selected item in the game. [2.4] Loading and saving games To save the current location in the game, use the portable telephone in Yakumo's inventory to call Ling-Ling. Here is a translation of the conversation. Yakumo: I'll call Ling-Ling ............ Ling-Ling: Hello! This is Yogekisha! Ah! Yakumo Where are you now? Ling-Ling: ...I see. And do you want to save? Yes No * YES * Ling-Ling: Save completed! Good luck. * NO * Ling-Ling: Is that so! Then it was no use calling, was it? SLAM!! The next time the game starts, the option to continue from that point will be presented. After choosing GAME START, Yakumo will appear in the Yogekisha office. Here is a translation. Ling-Ling: Yakumo, I wonder where you want to start from today. [a menu showing the three save-game slots appears] Ling-Ling: Do your best! Yakumo: Right, right, because you can really treat your employees roughly. Ling-Ling: Eh, did you say something? Yakumo: ...well, I'm going now. To start the game from the beginning, choose an empty save slot. If all of the slots are full, one will have to be deleted from the main options menu. [2.5] Combat At certain points in the game, Yakumo will have to fight monsters. The status bar will change to contain two horizontal bars for both Yakumo and the monster. The red bar is "body", same as the normal health meter. The blue bar is "spirit", which limits how many magical attacks can be used. When combat starts, a list of possible actions appears. Yakumo can perform three actions per combat round, and then the list appears again. The rounds continue until either Yakumo or the monster lose all of their health. The standard combat options are as follows, from left to right: T'u-Chao (earth claw) - attack for about 30% damage Ching-Ku (mirror tick) - completely block an attack Tsou-Lin (running scale) - increase power of Kuang-Ya attack Kuang-Ya (shining fang) - attack for about 30% damage Jump - avoid attack; increase Kuang-Ya power Attack - attack for about 10% damage Defend - block most of an attack The last three options do not have associated graphics. The beast attacks can only be selected if Yakumo has enough spirit remaining. If Yakumo performs certain moves in sequence, he can increase his attack power. Jump + Kuang-Ya will cause double the damage as a normal Kuang-Ya, and Tsou-Lin + Kuang-Ya will cause TRIPLE the damage. However, if Yakumo is hit between the first and second attacks, the combo will be interrupted and the Kuang-Ya will only cause the normal damage. [3] Frequently Asked Questions Here are some hints and helpful pointers for some of the harder areas of the game. This section does NOT contain spoilers. For detailed solutions, see the walkthrough in the next section. [3.1] What are some general hints? Search for useful items everywhere. Sometimes items are hidden behind debris on the floor, but they can still be picked up by pressing DOWN. Once you use an item, you should be able to return to the place where you found it and pick up another one (except for charms). Also, it's a good idea to keep Yakumo at full health, since he could run into trouble at any time. [3.2] What does the title mean? "Juuma" literally means "beast demon" and is the word used in 3x3 Eyes to indicate the creatures like T'u-Chao that are controlled with beast magic. The word "houkan" literally means "restoring to the emperor". I think in this case, it refers to returning the stolen beast demons to the people of Bigoroa, which will make more sense as the plot develops in the game. [3.3] How can Yakumo open doors sealed with wards? This is one of the hardest puzzles in the game, particularly if you cannot read the hints provided by the old woman. As you may have learned, exploding cans will not destroy the wards or open the doors. Maybe something nearby will remove the ward for Yakumo? If that something is not in Yakumo's inventory, how can he encourage it to come to the door? Maybe he can pick it up? (See the walkthrough for a complete answer.) [3.4] How can Yakumo defeat the boss monsters? First of all, Yakumo had better be at 100% health before he enters a fight. There are plenty of healing charms in the game; use them. It is usually possible to win with only 50% health (as is the case when continuing the game after being killed), but it can require a bit of luck. My combat strategy is rather simple for early battles. I attack constantly, using nothing but T'u-Chao, Kuang-Ya, and Attack. Yakumo only has enough spirit for three offensive beast attacks, but that is usually enough. Higher-level monsters can be tougher to defeat, but some have attack patterns that can be learned and anticipated. The combined attacks (jumping Kuang-Ya, Tsou-Lin + Kuang-Ya) can cause a LOT of damage, but they have to be timed so that Yakumo is not hit between the first and second attacks. [4] Full Walkthrough And Translation This section contains (or will contain when it is finished) a full step-by-step walkthrough of the entire game. Since the game is in Japanese, translations are provided for the dialogue and menu choices. However, the walkthrough is designed to avoid revealing puzzles until necessary, so it can be read a section at a time while playing the game. When you first start the game, you will see the Banpresto logo followed by an introduction scene translated in section 1.1. You can skip the introduction by pressing START. The title screen will then appear, and after a few seconds the game will cycle through demos showing the various game levels. Press START to display the main menu, and select "GAME START" to begin the game... [4.1] Ruins -Hong Kong- Yakumo: Two days later when my work was finished and I returned, I heard from Ling-Ling that she had lost contact with Pai after that. Pai... I hope you're safe... Chapter 1 Ruins - Hong Kong - Yakumo begins in the old city of Kowloon. His health is at 50%, and his inventory contains a portable phone and a blue paper charm. Use the paper charm, and it will add to Yakumo's health. Each charm has approximately 17% healing power, so that 3 charms will increase Yakumo's health bar from 50% to 100%. First Yakumo needs to find the curio shop. ** CURIO SHOP ** As Yakumo walks down the street, you can make him inspect the buildings by pressing UP on the controller. He has a few comments: Yakumo: It looks like this place is not open yet. Yakumo: I think it's around here, the curio shop that Ling-Ling mentioned. Walk to the right until you reach a blue charm attached to the wall. Press UP, and Yakumo will take the charm. The next door on the right has a sign that says "Curio Shop" in Chinese characters above it. Enter the shop and talk to the owner. Yakumo: Hello, sir ...has Pai been here? Old man: Eh, what, another youngster from Ling-Ling? Old man: That girl was here 2 days ago asking all sort of questions about beast eggs. Yakumo: Do you know where Pai went after that? Old man: Well now Old man: That's right, a while ago that Hazrat guy was wandering around here. Why don't you ask him? Yakumo: Haan... OK, sir, thanks. While here, Yakumo might see if the old man has anything else to say. Leave the shop, then enter it again. Old man: Oh, the youngster from before Old man: How are things, did you find Hazrat? Yakumo: Not yet... Old man: I see Old man: I forgot to ask you before, but are you carrying any exploding cans? Yakumo: I don't have any. ...why do you ask? Old man: Never mind, just something I heard from Ling-Ling. Old man: Here in Kowloon, if you're looking for something, it's easier if you have those. Old man: I know, that factory manager ought to be able to give you some help. You should go ask him. Yakumo: If you say so. Yakumo: Thanks, I'm glad I talked to you. If Yakumo tried to talk to the old man a third time, he gets a brief response Old man: What are you doing? Aren't you going to look for that Hazrat guy? ** FACTORY (1F) ** Leave the shop, and go to the right. Get the charm off of the wall. Then go up the steps into the large factory building. Yakumo: It's dark... Yakumo: Where's the light switch, I wonder? [The factory contains lots of puzzles. If you don't want to spoil them, be careful about reading ahead. The dialogues offer many clues, though.] Turn on the switch near the door. Pick up the key that can now be seen on the floor. Yakumo can try to open the door below the stairs, but the key doesn't work. ** FACTORY MANAGER ** If Yakumo leaves the current room (after turning on the light switch) and then returns, the factory manager will be present. Yakumo can ask him for help. Yakumo: Mister, I want to make exploding cans, but... Manager: Exploding cans? Oh, the materials needed for those are 'empty cans', 'fuel', and 'ignition devices'. Manager: Together, those 3 parts make 1 device. If you bring the parts, I will make them for you. Yakumo: Thanks, you're a big help, mister. ** FACTORY (2F) ** Go up the stairs, and get the charm off of the wall. Make sure the key is selected in the inventory, and open the door. In the next room are some flames shooting from a pipe. Don't try to go through them! Instead, go down the ladder and turn the valve to cut off the flames. Also pick up the matchbox on the floor. Go back up the ladder, and continue to the next floor. ** FACTORY (3F) ** Go through the first door to the right. Go up the stairs, and pick up the jar on the floor of the small room. Go back down the stairs. SECRET: There is a health charm hidden in the junk below the 3-4 sign by the stairs. Go back to the first hallway on this floor, and continue to the right. Yakumo will run into a barrel and start to push it. Have Yakumo push the barrel under one of the vents near the ceiling, then jump up and stand on it. Yakumo can then reach up and check the vent. He doesn't find anything, although a rodent does fall out of one of the vents. Go through the door on the far right, and walk to the left. ** OLD LADY ** Talk to the old lady. Yakumo: Ma'am, you didn't happen to see a young girl around here, did you? Old Lady: Dear me! What was that again..? Yakumo: She's a cheerful girl with pink clothes and her hair tied in a ponytail. Her name is Pai, and... Old Lady: Ah, now I remember. Old Lady: I just met young Pai today. Old Lady: She gave me a steamed bun, and it was delicious. Yakumo: You saw Pai!? Do you know where she went? Old Lady: Hmm, I'm not sure, since she ran off quickly. Yakumo: Is that so... Let's see if the lady has anything else to say. Have Yakumo walk out the door to the left, then come back and talk to the lady again. Old Lady: Oh yes, you haven't seen my diary, have you? Old Lady: Ah... The days of my youth... That's not much help. Go through the door again, and continue to the left. There is a door sealed with a ward. Yakumo can try to open it, but... Yakumo: This talisman.. it makes me feel weak. Unh! No, I can't touch it. Go up the stairs to the room on the fourth floor. Take the charm off of the wall. The door here is sealed with a similar ward, so Yakumo cannot open it either. ** WARD PUZZLE ** Can't figure out how to get the doors open? Ask the lady if she has any hints. Old Lady: The protection wards in this area, well, they give off a special incense that is very effective. Old Lady: However, it tends to attract rodents... OK, but there aren't any rodents near the ward. Go out the door, come back, and see if she has anything else to offer. Old Lady: That's right, as for that jar, the wards could be protected from rodents. Old Lady: In my grandfather's store, sometimes rodents would slip into the jar by accident. Old Lady: There are some interesting tales in books... [This makes no sense to me either. I'll get someone to check my translation.] What Yakumo needs is a little assistance from one of the many rodents running around the building. Yakumo can use the jar to carry one of them to the door with the ward. Remember the rodent that fell out of the vent when Yakumo stood on the barrel to check it? Maybe he can catch that little guy in the jar. Go back to that room and check the rightmost vent. When the rodent falls out, go stand near it and Use the jar (select it in the inventory and press the Y button). Yakumo will catch the rodent and pick up the container. Just for fun, press the Y button again. Yakumo: This little rodent is a lively fellow. Now go back to the door with the ward (the one on the third floor), and Use the jar again. The little rodent is hungry, and it climbs up the door and eats the ward! Now that the door can be opened, enter the room and pick up the 2 explosive fuses and the matchbox. Just skip the sealed door on the fourth floor for now. Yakumo will come back later, and he can open it then. ** FACTORY (2F) ** Go through the doorway marked 3F|2, and continue down to the second floor. Get the charm. SECRET: There is a second charm in the far left junk pile below the 2F sign. Yakumo does not have the key for the door here. On the right is another barrel/vent arrangement, so Yakumo follow the same procedure as above so that he will be able to open the door that was skipped when he goes by it again. ** FACTORY (exit) ** Go down to the first floor, and out the door. Yakumo is in a side alley off the main street. Walk to the left, and get the charm. Keep moving to the left until Yakumo is back on the main street. Go into the building on the right, and pick up the 2 empty cans and the fuse. Exit the building and walk left. Yakumo can look at the cook as he passes the restaurant. Yakumo: I'm worried about all of the rodents around here. SECRET: Go up the ladder to the right of the factory entrance. On the far right, Yakumo can look UP and find a charm. ** EXPLODING CANS ** Re-enter the factory, and talk to the factory manager again. Manager: Aah... Just these are plenty. Let me see them. [takes materials from Yakumo] Manager: I can make these things with my own hands just like this! Manager: There, I'm done. Here they are. [gives exploding cans to Yakumo] Yakumo: Thanks, mister. ** BLOWING HOLES IN WALLS ** Go up to the second floor, and throw a can (Y button) at the weak-looking part of the wall. Inside, pick up the 2 matchboxes and the empty can. Notice that the matchbox has reappeared in the room down the ladder in the next room. When the factory manager makes the exploding cans, all of the materials are replaced in the level. This keeps Yakumo from running out of cans, and in fact allows him to collect a large number of them for later. This isn't really necessary, but you should make sure you have at least a few cans left when you leave the level. ** MESSAGE FROM A FRIEND ** Continue up to the third floor. Go past the lady and up the stairs to the room with the ward that was skipped earlier. Free the rodent, and enter the room after the rodent removes the ward for you. The room is empty, but a bird flies in as you enter. The bird turns into a piece of paper and float to the ground. When you pick it up, you see that it is a message: Letter: I left the key with the old lady. Haan Go see the old lady again. Old Lady: Some time ago, Haan left something for you with me. Here it is. Yakumo: Thank you very much. Yakumo now has a fancy-looking key. Go through the 3F|2 door, and use another can on the wall there. Inside the room you will find a key, a fuse, and can hidden behind a pole. ** LOST DIARY ** Go down to the second floor, and use the key you just found (not the one from Haan) on the door to the left. Inside the room is a red book. This must be the old woman's diary, so go back to the third floor and give it to her. Old Lady: Oh, my long lost diary! Old Lady: You did well in finding it... Boy, let me give you these charms. [she gives Yakumo 10 charms] ** WHERE IS HAAN? ** Now that you've almost fully explored the building, head back to the first floor. I would follow the same path as before, so you can pick up more materials for exploding cans. Give the materials to the manager, and get the cans from him. Then leave the building and come back, because he has a message. Manager: That's strange, a few moments ago, right here I'm sure... Manager: Was it Hazrat? It looked like him. Manager: It was awfully confusing, but I don't think he went to the second floor. Manager: He immediately disappeared ...where could he have gone? Yakumo: Haan!? I got it, thanks, mister. Yakumo: Really... Yakumo: If Haan was here, he could have known something. Yakumo: I wonder if Pai is safe...? As you might guess, there's only one place for Yakumo to look. Use Haan's key to open the door to the far right, under the stairs to the second floor. ** FIGHT! ** Yakumo: Wha-! What is this thing?! I hope Yakumo is at full health! It seems there is a large monster blocking his way, and he will have to defeat it to continue. See the instructions and fighting tips above. Kuang-Ya and T'u-Chao should show this loser that Yakumo means business. However, if Yakumo is having a bad day and is defeated, the monster will add insult to injury. Monster: Bwahahahahaha You can't even talk tough, sucker. Bring it on any time! If you lose, you can continue and start outside the door, ready to try again. Remember to heal Yakumo back to 100% if you have some charms remaining. Once you win, you can enter the next room. There is a light switch outside the door, so flip it on before entering. ** HAAN ** First, take a look at the map on the wall. (If the lights are off, you cannot read the text.) Sign: " -About the Underground Waterway Closure- Due to many puzzling accidents and deaths, the underground waterway factory is closed. " If you take a second glance, you will notice a smaller sign. Sign: "Now closed, and no responsibility is taken for accidents upon entry to the underground waterway." Then go chat with the guy sitting on the floor. Haan: What're you doing! You dimwit!! Yakumo: Haan! Where's Pai? Haan: Because you were fooling around, they managed to get away from me. Yakumo: She was kidnapped! By who? Haan: I dunno! Watch out... they use some crazy magic! Haan: Fujii, hurry up and go help Miss Pai! Yakumo: All right!! Haan: Hey! Take these! [he gives Yakumo 5 exploding cans] Yakumo: Exploding cans! Thanks, Haan, these will help! Have you saved recently? According to the "writing on the wall", it may be time for Yakumo to give Ling-Ling a phone call. Then go down the ladder. ** SHOCKING DISCOVERY ** If you dislike tests of your arcade reflexes, you will hate this next part. Yakumo falls into a sewer, and he should IMMEDIATELY jump out of the water. There are some loose wires ahead, causing lots of electric current to zap anything in the water. Remember to press and hold the jump button to jump higher than just tapping it. Once Yakumo is out of the water, watch the pattern of shocks to know when to jump back in. Press down and jump together to fall in the water, then try to jump forward as quickly as possible. After you reach the next platform, toss a can at the circuit box to make the water safe. Then continue to the end of the tunnel and go through the door. Pai: You're wrong! Sharia: Well, then why have you been looking for us! Pai: That's... Yakumo: Pai! Pai: Yakumo! Sharia: H-, his forehead! You're part of that guy's group! Yakumo: Wa-, wait a minute. Sharia: Silence! [ZAP!] Pai: KYAAAA!! Yakumo: Why you!! Pai: Don't! Yakumo, don't fight. Yakumo: Pai, out of the way! Do you want to fight? Yes No * YES * If you win, here is the result. Miria: Sharia!! Sharia: Run away..Miria Miria: But! Sharia: I'll be OK, now go! * NO * Pai: Yakumo, don't! Yakumo: Sh...I understand. [the green-haired girls leave] Yakumo: Ah, wait, hey!! [4.2] Diverging Paths Depending on the choice made above, you will follow one of two storylines for the rest of the game. If you chose not to fight, then from now on you should read only the sections ending with ".1" and skip the others. Start with Nepal below. Likewise, if you fought and won above, then read only the sections ending with ".2". Right now, skip down to the Tibet section. [4.2.1] Magic Forest -Nepal- Ling-Ling: So, what's your excuse for coming back emptyhanded? Yakumo: Give me a break... We didn't see any beasts when we were called back. Phone: Brrrrring... Ling-Ling: Hello, Yogekisha..oh, Ms. Huang Huang: You mentioned a tribe that uses beasts. It seems they are in Nepal. Ling-Ling: Thank you very much, yes, yes yes, about that, yes Ling-Ling: You know what this means, Yakumo. Yakumo: I've had enough, I'm just glad I could help make sure Pai was safe. Sanjiyan: You fool! Yakumo: Sanjiyan!? Sanjiyan: Those people are looking to collect the world's spirit power, and Sanjiyan: they were scared when seeing the leader's forehead... It's obvious that we're chasing after Benares!! Sanjiyan: Quickly, let's head to Nepal!! Chapter 2 Magic Forest - Nepal - Yakumo and Pai travel together in this level. You cannot control Pai's actions, but she takes parts in conversations. She cannot be killed. This level is a real pain, because there's a lot of running back and forth and talking to people. Let's get started by walking down the street and checking the houses. ** FIRST HOUSE ** Man: What's up with you? Yakumo: We're searching for green-haired twin girls, have you seen them? Man: I haven't. ** SECOND HOUSE ** Man: Who are you! Barging in to a person's house Yakumo: Well, We're searching for someone... Man: Quickly, get out! Pai: Yakumo, looks like we should leave. Yakumo: I guess so. Before leaving, search to the far right of the altar to find a hidden charm. ** STRANGE CHAMBER ** After leaving the house, go through the alley on the right to reach a parallel street. There is nothing to see on the right, but to the far left is a mysterious chamber. Pai: What? Scary statue, eh, Yakumo? Yakumo: Right. Before leaving, Yakumo says... Yakumo: What? Did I feel a suspicious, ghostly air, or was it my imagination? ** MAMA ** Returning to the main street, Pai sees a familiar face to the right of the next doorway. Pai: Yakumo, Yakumo! Look, look! Yakumo: What? Mama! Mama: Well, if it isn't Yakumo, ooh, you two are having a nice date. Are you sightseeing too? Yakumo: Give me a break, that's not why we're here. Later. ** THIRD HOUSE ** Old Man: What is it? Yakumo: We're searching for twin girls... Old Man: They're not twins, but in front of the house are a lot. Yakumo: Ah... That's not them... Old Man: Then I don't know. ** FIRST HOUSE (visit #2) ** At this point you want to backtrack and check with the man in the first house again. Trust me. Yakumo: Is the person who lives in the big house always in a bad mood? Man: You mean Natsun? No, not normally, but recently, ah, what was it? Man: Since about the time... Man: Right, right, since he came back from the forest. Yakumo: ...forest? Man: At the foot of the mountain there's a forest. Yakumo: Those girls could be in the forest. Yakumo: Let's go, Pai! Pai: Yakumo, I'm hungry... Yakumo: Afterwords I'll buy you something Pai: Yipee What should I get... ** FOREST ** Go down the street all the way to the right, past Mama and friends. Pai and Yakumo will enter the forest. There is a hidden charm at the base of the first tree. After walking in the same direction for a while, they don't seem to be making much progress. Pai: No matter what, we can't go into the forest. Yakumo: You're right. Yakumo: It seems like we are going in circles. They decide to try to go a little further. Yakumo: This forest is suspicious, what in the world... Pai: Yakumo... Turn back to the village... Yakumo: It's no use, let's go back. Walk back down the street and talk to everyone. ** MAMA (visit #2) ** Mama: You two don't look happy, why don't you go sightseeing? Yakumo: Because we're not here to sightsee. ** THIRD HOUSE (#2) ** Old Man: What's going on, young one? Old Man: After you left, did you find the twin girls? Yakumo: We don't have any information... Old Man: Well, you have fallen for those twins. Yakumo: Huh? Old Man: I too once chased after a woman... Don't give up, young one. Yakumo: Right... ** SECOND HOUSE (#2) ** Natsun: You came back! Yakumo: That... Natsun: Quickly get out of here! ** FIRST HOUSE (#3) ** Yakumo: That forest, there's something strange... Man: Forest? What's strange? Yakumo: Even if you go into it, you make no progress. Man: That shouldn't be... Recently, I haven't gone to the forest, so I don't know... Man: Ah, the old man could know... He also sees things, that old man. ** THIRD HOUSE (#3) ** Go see what the old man has to say. Yakumo: Old man, I want to ask about the forest. Old Man: Forest? About that forest Old Man: ...recent things. Old Man: Since Natsun returned from the forest, the forest has been strange. Old Man: If you have Pujari's chalice, you should be able to enter the forest. Yakumo: This chalice of Pujari, where is it? Old Man: That... a short while ago, someone stole it. Yakumo: Stolen...that... What's in that forest. Yakumo: There are no clues here, for now we'll keep searching. Yakumo: Thank you, old man. ** SECOND HOUSE (#3) ** This all seems to center around Natsun. Go chat with him. Natsun: You're back again! Yakumo: Ah, Puja... Natsun: I don't know about Pujari's chalice. I don't know about the forest. Go away! Gee, that wasn't suspicious at all... ** FIRST HOUSE (#4) ** Yakumo: Do you know anything about Pujari's chalice? Man: Pujari's chalice... Man: Roughly speaking, I heard something from the old man. Man: It's something that can crush wicked things, and it's no superstition. Yakumo: Do you know where it is? Man: Hmm... ** FOREST (#2) ** Go check the forest again. Pai: We can't go inside, Yakumo. Yakumo: It seems impossible without Pujari's chalice. ** MAMA (#3) ** Mama: What's wrong, Yakumo, wandering around the village. Yakumo: Nothing's the matter, we're going to talk to people. Yakumo: Besides that, is anything peculiar? Mama: Anything peculiar? Recently, the make-up paste is bad... Yakumo: That's not it, is there anything else? Mama: Well, a panicked guy went running into the side street. Mama: Right, right, a guy wearing blue clothes. Pai: Was it Natsun? Yakumo: Could be. Let's go, Pai. ** STRANGE CHAMBER (#2) ** Yakumo and Pai go through the alley and head to the strange chamber on the left. As they get ready to enter, they hear voices: Yakumo: I can hear something. Voice: Did you bring Pujari's chalice? Natsun: Lo-look, here it is... Voice: In that case, your job is done, be gone. Yakumo and Pai enter the chamber. Yakumo: Don't do it! Voice: You who hinder us, be gone. Yakumo: Pai! Get out with Natsun! Quickly! Yakumo fights the statue! Don't bother with fancy moves, just pound it. Natsun: I apologize to you, but I had no choice. Natsun: That monster demanded Pujari's chalice, or it would attack the village... Natsun: But, now the village is saved. Here's the object you were seeking. [Natsun gives Yakumo the chalice] Yakumo: OK, now we can advance through the forest. Yakumo: ...however, what was that demon doing in the forest? ** FOREST (with chalice) ** After you enter the forest, use the chalice. There is a bright flash. Yakumo: Now we can go to the interior. Go right until a bird flies out of a tree. Search the tree to uncover a talisman, then tear it down. Yakumo: A talisman in this place Yakumo: I see, was is due to this that we were going around in circles? Sanjiyan: You idiot! If you don't know those things you are not fit to be my Wu. Yakumo: Ah! Sanjiyan Sanjiyan: That talisman was the reason we were going around in cirles. Yakumo: That's what I thought. Be careful! On the next screen a root creature pops out of the ground, and you need a running start to jump over it. Don't worry if Pai doesn't make it; she'll show up again sooner or later. ** GUPTA ** Go down the pathway on the other side of the root creature. Gupta: Of course, the boy and the divine demon, what are you doing here? Yakumo: Gupta... Yakumo: Actually, we are searching for a tribe of beast-using people. Gupta: Beast-using... perhaps the people of Bigoroa? Yakumo: You know them? Gupta: Yes, but the people of Bigoroa should have been destroyed long ago. Yakumo: Destroyed... I see, thank you. Go back down the same path, and continue to the right. There are two more root creatures to jump over. ** FOREST MIRROR ** Pai: What? Pai and Yakumo are over there. Yakumo: What is going on here... Think back to the last trick, which involved a talisman stuck on a tree. Try checking this tree. You find one, so tear it down. Yakumo: Crap, there's another magic charm here... Yakumo: What annoying tricks! Pai: Are those girls all right... Yakumo: Let's go Pai. ** FOREST MAZE ** Go down the path, and when you exit a bird will fly out of the tree above you towards the left. Follow the bird to find your way out of the forest. The pattern should be left, right, right, left, right, right. Pai: Yakumo the ghostly air is steadily getting stronger. Yakumo: We're close! Hurry, Pai! There are two root creatures ahead, so avoid them. ** FOREST TRAP ** Yakumo: Huh? Yakumo: No good! It's a trap! Pai: Waa- Yakumo- Yakumo: Crap! I can't do anything Yakumo: No use! I can't move! ** FOREST DEMON ** Demon: Who are you jerks? Pai: Yakumo, there! Yakumo: Ah! That girl. Demon: Hoho, this girl's comrades. In that case, die! Yakumo fights the evil plant woman. If you're lucky, jumping Kuang-ya and T'u-chao can take her out in the first round. Demon: You and that Wu are... ugh.. at least only this girl, and my master's origin... ** RETURN TO HONG KONG ** Ling-Ling: That's enough! The other Wu and Yakumo are enemies! Ling-Ling: They're not comrades, I say. Ling-Ling: We helped you, and you won't explain. Yakumo: Forget it, it's fine if she doesn't talk! Yakumo: Nobody can make her talk. Pai: Hey, if you're worried, you should try to talk. Pai: Yakumo, when Pai is worried, always comes to the rescue. Miria: ...my name is Miria. Miria: I and my younger twin Sharia are the village sorceresses. I can borrow the spirit of the earth. Miria: Sharia is able to summon the holy messenger beasts. Miria: Long ago our village was destroyed, and our treasure, every beast egg, was snatched away. Miria: I heard it was that man called Long Huang (dragon emperor), with the same character as him...that's all. Yakumo: That's good enough. It's dangerous, since that man is aiming for your powers. Yakumo: Where did they come from, if you know please tell me. Your sister may also be there. Miria: In Egypt, they seemed to come through a door leading to a foreign world... Pai: When Pai is in trouble, Yakumo always comes to help. Sharia: ...I am Sharia... Sharia: My and my older twin Miria are survivors of a tribe named Bigoroa... Long: Bigoroa..that's a former race from the Nepal region that worships beasts as divine messengers, isn't it. Long: I heard they were destroyed... Sharia: Our village was burned, and our treasure the divine messengers' eggs were stolen. Sharia: It was the man called Long Huang (dragon emperor) with that same character on his forehead... Sharia: Therefore... Please help Miria... Sharia: Our aim is to use the power of village's sorceresses, the power of the divine messengers, against that man. Sharia: But, our best weapon who can control the earth spirits to strike back is Miria! Yakumo: Calm down! She probably hasn't been captured yet! Do you know where she was heading? Sharia: There's a temple in Tibet, where she intends to seek shelter. Yakumo: All right, first of all let's go check there. Ling-Ling: It's better if Pai remains here, right... Pai: Eh, what!? Pai is going too! Yakumo: No! As long as Benares is involved, to go would be too dangerous. Pai: Yakumo... Yakumo: Don't give me that look! It's OK! We will be back soon! Pai: Uh huh... [5] Cheats and Hacks [5.1] Translation ROM patch Like many other anime games for the Super Famicom, this 3x3 Eyes game unfortunately was never released outside of Japan. However, the wonders of modern technology allow an English-language version of the game to be played on a personal computer! The necessary components are: - a Super Famicom / SNES emulator such as ZSNES or Snes9x http://www.zsnes.com/ http://www.snes9x.com/ http://www.zophar.net/ - the game ROM file (a copy of the game cartridge data) - the translation patch The translation patch is being developed by Dag B, based on the translations in this document. The patch can be downloaded here: * patch not yet available * [5.2] ROM cheats When playing the game on a PC using an emulator, there are several methods of cheating unavailable with the console system. For example, changing the display order of the screen layers will display items that are normally hidden. (In ZSNES, press the '2' key to disable layer 2 and reveal some items.) Here are some cheats provided by Dag B. To receive unlimited items, first you need to have at least one of the item before you can use the cheat.
